What’s the Golden Ratio?

The Golden Ratio is a mathematical formula studied by the Ancient Greeks and implemented throughout many disciplines, from architecture to art, for thousands of years. The ratio is approximately 1:1.61, illustrated by a rectangle split into a square and a smaller rectangle. The smaller rectangle can further divide into irregular-sized pieces. Through this method, design and art quickly appeal to the eye.

Why is the Golden Ratio relevant?

In modern times, the Golden Ratio has been effectively applied to website design. Experienced website developers use the Golden Ratio to draw the eye of the viewer and direct their attention to specific areas of a website.

When viewing a website, have you ever noticed that the content section of a webpage and the sidebar fit this pattern? The content is typically larger in proportion to the sidebar because the content bears more depth and requires more attention from the viewer than the sidebar, which usually gives less detailed information. This is also apparent on the top of a webpage as well. When opening up the Omnizant webpage, you will see the top bar contains the header, “Omnizant” as well as our menu options. These two elements also follow the Golden Ratio, as the space containing the header is proportionally larger than the menu options.

Visual harmony on your website is just one important element needed to effectively communicate your message to your audience. We’re pros at the science behind great website design. Contact us today to get started.
